about us

Native Roots Conservation Landscaping is a family affair, owned by the native Washingtonian husband and wife team: Thomas Schneider and Joni Miller.

Thomas is a leading expert in ecological landscaping and is a certified Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional. With a B.S. in Wildlife Science from Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources and the Environment, and a M.S. in Environmental Science and Policy from George Mason’s College of Science, Thomas has a deep understanding of ecology and sustainability, coupled with a sharp eye for design. Working closely with clients, designers, and crews, alike, Thomas collaborates seamlessly to create, plant, and maintain conservation landscapes that are not only beautiful, but ecologically functional. Thomas formerly served as Executive Director of the workforce development nonprofit he founded, Rooftop Roots, which focused on training individuals in urban agriculture and conservation landscaping.

Joni grew up with a love of nature and an appreciation for all four-legged creatures, both great and small. Leveraging her business background from Boston University, Joni managed several local food start ups in the area prior to starting Native Roots. Coming from a family with deep and long standing ties to the local community, Joni has a vast knowledge, network, and feel for the land. So while Thomas toils in the fields, Joni skillfully runs the operation (and the family!), ensuring a smooth and a satisfactory customer experience.
